Bootable Flash Drive
What determines a flash drives bootability is the bios. Some bios will allow you to set it so that the computer boots off of USB and other, mostly older bios, won't allow it.
In reality, most systems will allow you to make the flash drive bootable. All you need to do is to change the setting in bios. When your computer starts up, look for the buttons to hit to enter bios setup.
Some computers have a unique feature that allows you to toggle the boot options with a single key. However, most bios setups do not work this way.
The neat thing about having a bootable flash drive, is that you can take it with you and have a full operating system on it. You can also get better internet security because viruses won't attach to your hard drive while surfing. If you really want security, use a bootable flash drive and set it up so that it is in read only. That means that nothing can be written to it.
